Transportation & Accommodation

Komodo Travel & Transportation strives to ensure your travels are safe, comfortable, and efficient. We recognize too, that the mode of travel itself, is very much a part of the travel experience as is the journey. Travel, not just the “getting there”, is an opportunity to soak up the natural and cultural context of the places we visit and to reflect on our own lives and perspectives. To quote the inimitable Tom Waits, “I’ve seen it all through the yellow windows of the evening train”. While we do organize “self-guided” experiences, your journey and experience with us, can become all the richer when accompanied by our knowledgeable local guides and or host and concierge support.

Travel by Air

Indonesia hosts some 230 airports. All major Indonesian islands are served by daily scheduled flights often by multiple carriers. Most international flights and certain inter island travel rely on airports in Java, Bali, Sumatra and Sulawesi. Primary hubs are:

· Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, Java

· Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya, East Java

· Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar, Bali

· Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) in Medan, Sumatra

· Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar, Sulawesi

Some Indonesian locations are served daily by multiple flights and airlines while those more off the beaten track may be served less frequently. Allow yourself plenty of extra time on the day of travel to and from any Indonesian location. Our guests from time to time require us to book private charter fixed wing and rotary aircraft where time is more limited. Tarmac pickups and transfers are possible in some instances but usually require substantial lead time for approval.

Weather cancellations or delays can occur, particularly in the winter months. Unpredictable volcanic activity can also cause travel delays.

Komodo Travel & Transportation can arrange all internal flight requirements associated with your travel, as well as VIP service at local airports, to the extent allowed local airport authorities. We also frequently engage with local qualified charter companies providing first class, private fixed wing aircraft and helicopter services as required. Use of private charter aircraft in your travel can make the most of your holiday time, allow you ease of access and allow you to travel on your own schedule.

Travel by Water

Indonesia offers among the world’s finest opportunities for yachting, water-based sports and explorations. Travel by traditional yacht, super yacht or even kayak and local handmade outrigger can be an ideal way to island-hop and explore destinations like Komodo National Park (to some considered the Indonesia Riviera), Raja Ampat (jewel of Northeast Indonesia), and numerous other magical coastal locations “at the back of beyond”. Indonesia also offers diverse opportunities for travel on her inland waters. In every case, we ensure all vessels procured are “fit for purpose” through boat inspections and captain and crew interviews. We pay particular attention to: crew knowledge and communication skills; overall state of maintenance and repair; Standard Operating Procedures; back-up equipment; communications equipment; first aid supplies and training; guest quarters; bathrooms/bathroom amenities; gally and dining areas; marine safety equipment, and hygiene.

Overland Travel

Travel overland in Indonesia can be enjoyed on foot, horse and virtually every form of wheeled device from unicycle to ultra-luxury car, van or bus. In every case, we strive to ensure your safety and comfort and that equipment and drivers/guides are suited to the journey and level of service requirements. While opportunities for self-guided overland travel can be arranged, for most of our guests, we strongly advise driver-supported travel due to the challenging driving conditions the country can presents as well as their language skills and local knowledge.

Accommodations

Indonesia offers a full spectrum of accommodations, from glamping, beach huts, and homestays, to eco-resorts, boutique hotels, 5 Star hotels, and private villas. A wide range of luxury live aboard yachts and traditional “Phinisi” style boats are available. A few key points:

  • More popular accommodations and certain bespoke transportation options can and do fill-up during peak travel times. Planning and booking early is always a good idea.
  • Confirm whether there are any significant sources of noise pollution impinging on the accommodation.
  • No matter where you stay, be mindful about safety, security and hygiene.
  • Know where alternate exits are and ensure they are viable in case of fire or earthquake.
  • Be courteous to the staff, even when frustration occur.
  • When requesting special services or arrangements, never accept a nod of the head or simple “Yes” , ask for your host to describe what they intend to do.
